Yesterday we were at Marisa and Marios' house, and we were sitting out in the yard talking about the trees that they had planted, and the other trees in their yard and in their neighborhood, and Grandma (Lorna) told us a story about when she was in school.
She had a teacher who was very much into botany, and knew a lot about different kinds of trees, and this teacher told the class that anytime someone brought in a branch/leaf of a tree, if he couldn't identify it he would give them a candy bar.
Grandma said that her dad was always selling trees, and so she was able to take in a lot of different samples, and she said that she got more candy bars than anyone else in the class.

Lagoon
Last week as we were driving home from Cherry Hills, Grandma (Lorna) was telling me about the summer she worked at Lagoon:
It started when she and a friend got summer jobs rolling cigars. Grandma said they hated that job so much they didn't last the week, and their employer was so mad a them for quitting that he refused to pay them for the days that they did work.
After that experience they were offered jobs working at Lagoon. Grandma ran the dime toss booth, and her friend worked another booth on the other side of the park. During their shift they would communicate with each other by sending notes back and forth with the young men who worked cleaning up the litter in the park.
They would ride the Old Bamberger railroad out to the park each day arriving around noon. Their jobs didn't start until around 5:00 PM, so they would spend the days swimming at the pool there. Then after work the lady who owned the booths would give them a ride home.
Grandma said that most of the people who would play the dime toss were service men who worked at one of the military bases in the valley. The prizes for winning the dime toss were plates or glasses, or other types of dishes, but since the men were going back to base they didn't keep the prizes, but would give them to Grandma. She said that by the end of the summer she had collect a couple of different full sets of plates as well as several sets of glasses.

Cousins and Babysitting
Lorna was saying how as a child she lived two doors down from her cousins, with Grandma in between. There was a girl cousin her age, Beverly, and Lorna and Beverly were always responsible for Beverly's younger twin brothers. Beverly would be in charge of one and Lorna in charge of the other. Even if they were going out for a walk or anywhere, they had to take the twins with them.
Lorna talks about how funny that was, because she didn't have to take her little brother with her, but somehow she and Beverly got snagged for looking after those twins.
Lorna and Beverly were close until Lorna, who was a year older in school, moved on to the Junior High, while Beverly was still at the grade school. Suddenly Lorna thought she was too important to hang out with Beverly anymore, and when Lorna ignored her after school, Beverly would feel sad and would run and tell their Grandma all about how Lorna was being mean to her.
Unfortunately they didn't stay in close contact after Lorna moved to Salt Lake.

Baptism
Grandma (Lorna) was telling me this morning how different things were when she got baptized. There was a pond in town that was the local swimming hole and that was where they would have baptisms. Everyone was kind of disappointed when it was time for baptisms though, because it meant they had to get out and stop swimming!
I asked if they stayed after the baptism for swimming, and she said no, it was more often that they swam before the baptisms while they were waiting for everyone to arrive. So they were the ones who were annoyed when they had to get out for the baptisms!
Their dad would use "The Ponds" as motivation to get Grandma and Deloy to get their chores done. Once they had done two loads of hay, then he would take them to the ponds for an hour.

Article about Samuel Lee
I found this in an old Family Home Evening book and I was surprised about everything it said about our family history. You should read it. I know you will cherish it!

Trip down Memory Lane
Yesterday, Grandma (Lorna), Dad (Robyn), and I (Marisa) went on a little road trip around Payson, Salem, Santaquin and Genola. We had the following items on our casual to-do list:
Louise and Cecil's house was at the end of a lane and Nel's and Annie's house was four telephone poles away. Nel's and Annie's house is still standing and pretty much the same from the outside. It's a bungalow sided with large white bricks. One summer, Cecil sold a cow to buy a bike for Lorna and Deloy. They learned how to ride the bike quickly, but noone taught them how to stop. They would ride often between their house and their grandparents'. When they would get to the third telephone pole they would start yelling for their uncle to come out and stop them. Once he didn't make it in time. Lorna turned left into the field and rode and rode while their unclechased after them into the field.
Later, we drove from Elberta around the backside of the lake. Grandma told us how her dad raised turkeys on the farm next to the lake. While they were watching the turkeys, Deloy and Lorna would take pitchforks and stab carp from the lake. They would then feed the carp to the turkeys.
The family would go to the same farmland every Easter. Deloy and Lorna would take their Easter eggs and try to roll them down the hill into the lake.
- See how work on the "Dream Mine" was progressing
- See how work on the new Payson Temple was progressing
- Visit the graves in Santaquin
- Eat scones at The Family Tree
- See Great-great-grandma's (Nel's and Annie's) house in Genola

Welcome!
Welcome family! This is a blog designed to document as much family history as we can before it's lost. The goal is to find out, remember, and record any stories you know already or any you learn from Grandma. I thought this would be a good way for everyone to be able to contribute and have access to these stories. Also, it will help us see where there are holes, so we don't all ask Grandma for the same information over and over again.(Although, I know she loves to tell stories and doesn't mind repeating.) Please, feel free to add videos, pictures, or anything else you wish, too. The list on the side are just some ideas of things you could ask Grandma about.
Finally, this website is not limited to only stories about Dean and Lorna, but it can include any information from ancestors or descendants. I think this could be a great project for all of us!
If you're wondering what to find out about, use the story-starters on the right!
